Storytelling And The Math (Basic) Content Area- An Article

Storytelling and the math content area can be a cooperative partnership with education and literacy. The math content area, basic and advanced can benefit the the addition of stories to the curriculum.

Stories read, listened to or seen can be used to extract lessons in the math content area.

Examples of creating these possibilities are infinite. Here are a few examples for basic math.

1. Math stories that tell about math. Assessments can be created for basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

2. Travel stories can also be used. Adding and subtracting mileage, gas used, miles per gallon, distances and total of supplies.

3. Stories about buying and purchasing.

4. Stories about sports. Adding and subtracting scores and doing averages.

5. Stories about counting. Taking simple stories and adding and subtracting.
Examples:
Add all numbers found on the page to the page number. Subtract the page number from all of the numbers found on the page.

6. Stories about rain. Adding rainfall totals for the local area or comparing totals to other areas.

7. Stories about trains. Adding and subtracting distances. Also measuring the length and height of the trains. Calculating the speed of trains and the distance that they travel.

8. Animal stories. Adding and subtracting life spans.

9. Stories about vegetables and fruits.

Example:
Apples weigh 5 pounds and cost 30 cents a pound.
Multiply to get a total.
How many apples can be bought?
How much would it cost to eat one apple a day?
Do the same math for bananas and answer the questions.
Also subtract the difference between bananas and apples.
